The main components of crude oil are various hydrocarbons and asphalt, which do not corrode storage tanks, so the sidewalls of crude oil tanks are generally not corroded. However, the bottom sediment water in crude oil tanks contains inorganic salts, chlorides, organic acids, and microorganisms, leading to electrochemical corrosion and bacterial corrosion. The commonly used cathodic protection method for the inner walls of storage tanks and pipelines is the sacrificial anode protection method. Sacrificial anodes can be arranged freely without worrying about power connections; their potential is limited, eliminating the risk of over-protection; and they can be manufactured in any shape. Large water tanks, such as elevated water tanks, river water tanks in power stations, seawater storage tanks, and boiler feedwater tanks, can all use this sacrificial anode.

Internal corrosion of storage tanks is related to factors such as the type, properties, composition, temperature, and frequency of change of the stored medium. Whether storing liquids or gases, there are two corrosive environments: the gas phase and the liquid phase. For media like crude oil, the liquid phase is further divided into two layers: the oil layer and the bottom sediment water layer.
(1) Tank Top and Upper Tank Wall
This area is not in direct contact with the oil product and belongs to gas-phase corrosion, which is essentially still electrochemical corrosion.
(2) Liquid-Phase Corrosion in the Middle of the Tank Wall
The middle vertical tank wall is in direct contact with the oil product. Since water in the oil product tends to settle at the bottom, corrosion in this area is *light. The corrosion forms include chemical corrosion from the oil product and electrochemical corrosion from electrolytes contained in the oil product. The electrolytes in the oil product are mostly carried during the transfer process due to agitation. zz1718999
